CDT yesterday received a prestigious R&D Smart award from the UK’s Department of Trade and Industry. The award is in recognition of the on-going development of the First OLED In-line manufacturing Process (FOIL).

The FOIL project is a three-way co-operation between CDT, OTB – a leading manufacturer of in-line production equipment based in The Netherlands – and Innoled, based in Singapore, who will take delivery of the equipment developed and manufacture the displays.

Each partner brings specialist expertise which is being used to combine novel and existing processes in a small size, high throughput production line designed to be operated in a non-cleanroom environment. CDT’s main contributions to the project include the design of new displays, the development of high speed, high-precision ink jet printing and surface treatment processes and the evaluation and testing of devices.

The project which is expected to last 18 months, is based at CDT’s world class Technology Development Centre and when completed will result in the world’s first commercially available in-line manufacturing line for organic light emitting diode displays.
